MANHATTAN COURTYARD
The courtyard spaces have been designed with the needs of the residence in mind, ensuring the maximum usability and opportunity for dynamacy within each space. The courtyards spaces have also been designed to be scalable to suit the needs of the forthcoming engineering work and budget constraints. With that in mind, this design utilizes the proposed concrete grid of pavement proposed by the engineers and their design or the roofing system. Also, the overall design of the courtyard is crafted to create visual interest when looked down upon from the residences above. Selected plants have been chosen for their fast growth, drought tolerance and hardiness in urban conditions.
Ground cover and shrub plantings have been selected to augment the theme in each area. In the south courtyard, lush ground cover is used to create a sense of calm and enclosure while paired with a shrub later what will provide screening of first floor residences and deter foot traffic at the building face. In the north courtyard sun loving ground cover is used to exhibit the bright and open nature of this space while punctuated with a shrub layer that creates visual and floral interest. This layer also provides screening to the first floor residences and deters foot traffic toward the building face.
At the east and west of the courtyards are wooden benches which span the edges between the habitable space and the planted zones at the building face. These are used to maximize the seatingarea and act as a barrier to prevent foot traffic into the planted zones at the building face. In both the north and south courtyard are tables with chairs and umbrellas. These items are movable within the space tomaximize use potential. There are also solitary chairs located in each space which residents can move around the courtyard as they please.
